A testosterone test measures the amount of the male hormone in the blood. Both men and women produce the hormone.

Testosterone levels
Testosterone levels are naturally much higher in people assigned male at birth than in people assigned female at birth. Testosterone, the major sex hormone in males, is produced in the testicles. It has the role of normal male sexual development and function. During puberty, it helps boys develop male features like body and facial hair, deeper voice, and muscle strength.

In females, testosterone is produced in the ovaries. Being one of several male sex hormones, called androgens, in females testosterone effects ovarian function, bone strength, as well as libido.

DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone)
The adrenal glands produce a hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which is transformed in the body into testosterone and estrogen.
